Why did I start a CrossFit Box?

This is a question I often ask myself, to be totally transparent. It has been really difficult a lot of different times. As we approach one year in business, however, (WOO March 10!) I wanted to give the background for why I CrossFit, and why I felt called to open a box. This is a huge story, so I’ll keep it as short as possible in this post so as to not bore you.

April 13, 2014

My last year at NC State playing soccer, this date was written on both of my cleats. It is the day my mom passed away from cancer. She was such a vibrant woman, always full of life and energy, that when she was diagnosed, it was really a shock to all of our systems. When she died, I spent the next week hanging out at a friend’s CrossFit box for hours and hours per day. It became much more than a place to get physically fit. The box was my coping mechanism. It was how I would get over the biggest obstacle life had thrown my way yet. I wanted to give this same service to others.

Barcelona, Spain

Traveling abroad only increased my interest in CrossFit. This time I went to the box in order to meet some actual local residents of Barcelona. Maybe make a friend or two. I totally accomplished that. The group I worked out with became my family across the pond, and one guy in particular helped show me the true city. I also found that, physically, I was getting way better in every aspect while I was doing CrossFit. I was pretty much hooked at this point. But it took Tampa to drive the point home.

Tampa, Florida

Two weeks after getting home from Barcelona, I moved to Tampa, Florida. I was somehow even more alone than I was in Barcelona, so I thought I’d use the same tactic as Barcelona and joined a CrossFit box. At this point I also believed in the programming of CrossFit, and I wanted to test it out for an extended period. I loved it so much. I was spending 3 or 4 hours there per day. It became more of my home than my apartment. It reminded me so much of why I wanted to open a box, and I decided to take the leap.

Our Mission

All of that together has guided the mission of Summit Strength: to uncover and build the true inner strength of every person who walks through our doors so that they can conquer the obstacles of everyday life. Whatever the big obstacle is, you can get over it. That’s what keeps the doors open at the box. That’s why we get up and do it every single day.

Am I ready for CrossFit?

We are asked, “Am I ready for CrossFit?” multiple times every week. The knee jerk reaction is to say yes. Then I got to thinking if that’s really true, or not. The biggest cliche in CrossFit is that everyone can do CrossFit. Ask any well-intentioned, experienced CrossFit coach or athlete and they will say, “CrossFit … more »
