Member Success: Reba Morris

For this member success story, we are highlighting Reba Morris. Reba first joined our box all the way back in 2016. She was actually one of our first members, and has truly helped our box and community grow from the ground up. What has been particularly inspiring to watch has been her transformation from looking at a specific goal as the desired result, to focusing on the journey and the process as the reward for the work.

Reba, you are a total joy to have in our community. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience here, and thank you even more for the always-positive attitude you bring with you to class every day. You’re the best!

Q: What has been your proudest moment in the past 90 days?

A: Really, I’ve had three “proudest moments” since starting with Summit. First, I was so happy and proud to pass my fitness test for work. It was a huge goal of mine, and to be able to pass it really meant so much to me. It was also just the culmination of getting back into shape. I had always been fit when I was growing up, and losing that was hard. It was really fulfilling to get back into shape.

I was also very proud of how I did on the Nutrition Challenge. It took a lot of lifestyle changes for me to find success with the challenge, and those were hard. I’m proud that I was able to find a way to eat that works well for me and my life.

Most recently, I’ve been proud of my ability to find life balance with the gym. I have a pretty crazy, stress-filled life right now, and I typically come into the box feeling very stressed out. But when I leave, I feel so much better. It’s helped me find balance in a lot of different areas.

Q: What was your original goal when you started, and how has your overall goal changed since starting?

A: When I first started, my goal was all about passing the fitness test for work. It was a hard and fast goal, with a finish line, and being able to accomplish that gave me a lot of momentum moving forward. From that point, when I was training for a very specific goal, I have been able to not stress out about how much faster I progress, and I’m able to relax and have fun with fitness.

What has been great is that I’m still finding myself making a PR on lifts and movements consistently. I’ve changed my mindset from focusing on one single goal or task, and instead am focusing on the journey and the process as the goal. It has been fun seeing that mental change, along with the physical changes.

Q: What has been the biggest surprise since you started?

A: The biggest surprise for me is that I’m still here after all this time, and I’m really enjoying it! It’s normal, I think, to join a gym and not expect to really enjoy it. But with Summit, I love coming here. I look forward to it every day, because it is a lot more than fitness to me. I’ve been really surprised to see how it has affected so many areas of my life; social life, stress levels, mental strength, and nutritional choices have all been impacted by my time here.

I never expected it to make an impact on all of these areas of my life. But it’s become a social activity, and I know that after I come to class, no matter how stressed I am, I am going to leave feeling like, “O.K. I can handle the rest of my day.”

That last line from Reba really hit home with us. The mission here is to build stronger people who are ready to tackle life’s challenges. Plain and simple, Reba has exemplified that mission. To know that it is working, that she is able to come into our box and find energy for all the other demands life places on her, is so fulfilling. As with every member success story, it is truly all about her hard work, dedication, and commitment. Reba is such a champion of our community, and we love having her in our box. Reba, thank you again for your continued support of YOUR box!
